As the days grow longer and the warmth of spring fills the air, Stevens Square is buzzing with a renewed sense of life and energy. There’s something about this season that invites us to open our windows, slow down, and reconnect — with nature, with neighbors, and with ourselves.
Here at Stevens Square, blooming trees line the walkways, birdsong greets early risers, and neighbors step outside to enjoy the simple pleasure of a sunny day. Whether it’s a fox sighting in Baxter Woods, a pop-up concert by the bay, or picking up some fresh greens at the farmers’ market, life here is a beautiful blend of city living and natural calm.
If you’re someone who values both connection and quiet, both community and convenience, Stevens Square offers a uniquely Portland experience — one where you don’t have to choose between access to the outdoors and access to everything else.

Living in the Heart of Nature — Without Leaving the City
At Stevens Square, nature isn't just nearby — it's woven into your everyday life. The community is surrounded by green spaces, waterfront paths, and tree-lined streets that make outdoor living easy, spontaneous, and accessible.
From dog walks and bay-side bike rides to coffee at your favorite outdoor café, Stevens Square is a place that embraces outdoor living and the warmth of neighborhood life.
Baxter Woods
A 30-acre protected forest right beside the Stevens Square campus, Baxter Woods offers shaded trails, wildlife sightings, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for daily strolls or quiet moments in nature.

Fox Kits in the Woods: A Whiskered Welcome to Spring
One of the sweetest signs of the season came early this year when a red fox and her kits were spotted playing in Baxter Woods just steps from the Stevens Square campus. A resident happened to capture the magical moment from her back deck, giving all of us a front-row seat to spring’s quiet wonders. Watching the young kits tumble through the underbrush was a reminder of how closely we live with nature here.
Baxter Woods itself is a peaceful escape year-round, but in spring, its trails burst with new life. Budding trees, wildflowers, and migrating birds bring color and sound to the forest, creating the perfect spot for a reflective walk, a nature hike, or simply a breath of fresh air.

Baxter Boulevard & Back Cove

Only 1.2 miles from Stevens Square, Baxter Boulevard loops around Portland’s Back Cove. The 3.6-mile path is ideal for walking, running, or biking — with panoramic views of the water, the skyline, and distant islands. From May through September, “Sundays on the Boulevard” closes the road to cars, transforming the trail into a car-free park space with live music, community events, and the friendly energy of neighbors enjoying the day.
Deering Oaks Park & the Portland Farmers’ Market
Every Wednesday and Saturday, Deering Oaks Park comes to life with one of the oldest and most beloved farmers’ markets in Maine. Under the shade of towering oak trees, you’ll find fresh produce, artisan bread, flowers, coffee, handmade crafts, and smiling faces. It’s a great way to kick off your weekend, and it’s just a short distance from home.
More Parks, More Possibility
In every direction from Stevens Square, there’s a green space waiting to be explored. Whether you’re after quiet trails or open fields, you’ll find places that invite both movement and stillness.
Evergreen Memorial Park: A peaceful retreat with tree-lined paths, local history, and an Audubon bird sanctuary.
Presumpscot Park & Baxter Pines: Tucked away in a quiet area, these wooded parks offer a tranquil escape with forested trails and open clearings — ideal for reading, strolling, or simply soaking in the natural surroundings.
Payson Park: One of Portland’s most versatile outdoor areas, with sports courts, playgrounds, gardens, and room to roam.

Promenades with a View
Portland has some of the most beautiful promenades in the country, and Stevens Square residents are lucky to be just a short walk away from two of them:
Eastern Promenade: With sweeping views of Casco Bay, a shoreline path, and access to East End Beach, Eastern Promenade is a favorite for joggers, dog walkers, and sunset seekers. In summer, a seasonal kayak launch makes it easy to explore the bay by water.
Western Promenade: This historic park offers sweeping views of Portland and the surrounding areas. Known for its Victorian charm and quiet atmosphere, it’s a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll or to simply sit and enjoy the view. With its winding paths and picturesque benches, you’ll feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
