The Curtain Rises: Good Theater's Exciting New Chapter at Stevens Square!

Contributed by Brian P. Allen, Artistic Director, Good Theater

After more than two decades of bringing theater to Portland, Good Theater is thrilled to announce that renovations are officially underway at our brand-new home: Stevens Square Theater. This move represents so much more than a change of scenery—it's the beginning of an incredible journey to transform this space into a vibrant cultural hub.

A Dream Team for a Dream Space

We owe a huge thank-you to the brilliant team at Developers Collaborative (DC), who have been with us every step of the way. DC's vision, expertise, and unwavering belief in the power of the arts are helping turn Stevens Square into the kind of performance space that dreams are made of—complete with flexible seating, beautiful gathering areas, and behind-the-scenes upgrades that allow us to do things we never could before.

This collaboration goes beyond bricks and mortar; it's about creating a place where creativity can thrive, and the community can come together. DC has helped us design a space that is as welcoming as it is versatile—a venue ready to host not just Good Theater's shows but also fantastic productions and events from cultural organizations across the region.

 What's Coming to the Stage

As the renovations take shape, we're hard at work putting the final touches on an extraordinary season we'll unveil in February 2025. Here's a sneak peek at what's in store:

  • Our Grand Re-Opening Gala in Spring 2025 is an unforgettable celebration filled with music, tons of exceptional local talent, and some very special guests.

  • Mainstage Productions: Get ready for five fun and unforgettable shows. From heartwarming musicals to laugh-out-loud comedies, this season has something for everyone!

  • A New York Cabaret Series: Kicking off with Tony Award winner Lillias White, this series will bring some of Broadway's brightest stars to Stevens Square.

  • Summer Fun at Stevens Square: Starting in June 2025, get ready for a series of concerts, shows, and events that will make this venue the go-to destination for Portland's summer entertainment scene.

And that's not all! We're thrilled about the other amazing cultural organizations that will be using Stevens Square for their incredible productions. This is just the beginning of making this space a home for the entire arts community.

Why Stevens Square is a Game-Changer

Here's what makes this space so special:

  • Accessibility: First-floor access to all performance spaces means no stairs to climb, making Stevens Square inclusive and easy to navigate for everyone.

  • Flexible Seating: Whether we're hosting an intimate gathering of 100, a cabaret-style show with up to 50 guests near the stage, or a grand performance for 500, Stevens Square's seating options can do it all.

  • Free On-Site Parking: Parking stress is officially a thing of the past, with plenty of on-site spaces for audiences and staff.

  • Enhanced Acoustics: With state-of-the-art acoustical upgrades, every note and word will resonate beautifully.

  • State-of-the-Art Sound & Lighting: Brand-new sound systems, public address capabilities, and a cutting-edge LED lighting setup promise stunning visuals and audio for every production.

  • Spacious Lobby & Ample Restrooms: The two-story lobby features plenty of room to mingle, a convenient drop-off area, and ample restrooms!

  • Large Rehearsal Hall & Dressing Rooms: Fully equipped for both rehearsals and backstage needs, this venue offers flexibility and comfort for performers and creative teams alike.
